I think people choose different toolkits for putting themselves together. Forms, disciplines. Literature, or art, or comic books, or religion, or their jobs. The web was a way to put myself together.

I don't know if what's happening with Twitter and on Mastodon will be some sort of tipping point, but it feels real this time. It's not just nerds with a beef who are leaving Twitter. I'm seeing a decent number of "real" people trying Mastodon and it's very encouraging.
